The latest news and notes from the Racing World!
F-1 stays at 19
Formula One nearly went to twenty-two races, adding races in South Korea, Mexico, and New Jersey. Thank god. I can’t take twenty-two races of Vettel winning, I can barely take nineteen!
All May, all Indy, all ABC
ABC will air all the activities coming from the Indianapolis Brickyard. It will include the Grand Prix of Indy, Indy 500 Qualifying and two days, Indy 500 Carb Day, and of course the Indy 500.
NASCAR awards presented
Dale Earnhardt Jr. picked up his record breaking 11th straight Most Popular Driver of the year award. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won Rookie of the Year. Tony Stewart received the Myers Brother award for contributions to the sport. Those were among the more popular awards of the event. If you want to know the full list, get a life….Just kidding, don’t leave me! I’m just so very tired!
Stewart on NASCAR game cover
Tony Stewart will grace the cover of NASCAR ’14 by Activision and Eutechnyx. He handily defeated Jeff Gordon to win the honor.
Mobile 1 returns to SHR
Sticking to the Tony Stewart theme, Mobile 1 will be back with Stewart and his team Stewart-Haas Racing. They are rumored to be on for eleven races this year.
F-1 vs. NASCAR in Texas
Formula One will run in Austin, Texas the same day as NASCAR will be in Fort Worth in November. All I could think was HA! at that.
NASCAR buys Iowa Speedway
NASCAR has purchased Iowa Speedway to add it to its list of tracks. Even with that, they still won’t take the Sprint Cup series there but make sure Texas has two races. To hell with logic in NASCAR along with WWE I suppose.
Wise to Phil Parsons Racing and Phil Parsons Racing heads to Chevy
Josh Wise will be driving the 98 for Phil Parson Racing next season. I like Josh, good guy and had good runs in the Nationwide series for JR Motorsports. Give a brother a break! Also Parsons is going to Chevy after being with Ford. Chevy, Ford they will still finish 32nd.
Swan goes to two teams
Swan Racing has become a two race car team. The lineup will be Parker Kligermen and Cole Whitt. Two good young racers, who hopefully will get a shot to make a case for full time rides in good Nationwide cars….Swan Racing might as well be Phil Parsons Racing to me.
Jeff Burton gets a job
Jeff Burton will drive select races for Michael Waltrip Racing, and will be a test driver for the team. Jeff Burton will be testing the 55 this off season as Brian Vickers is still out with his blood clot issue.
Jeff Burton gets another job
Aside for driving for MWR, Burton will also be an analyst for NBC Sports in 2015 when NASCAR makes the move.
Rick Allen to NBC Sports
Rick Allen was also named this week as the lead announcer for NBC Sports when the move happens. That should be a fun pairing with him and Burton. But dear God, if Ward Burton gets a job there may there be mercy on the soul of the closed caption typist.
Owens named as crew chief to 43
Trent Owens is leaving Turner Scott Motorsports and becoming the crew chief for the 43 of Aric Almiorla. He replaces Todd Parrott after Parrott’s substance abuse suspension.
NASCAR changes HoF eligibility process
If a driver has raced for 30 years in the sport or turned 55 a calendar year for nomination they too can nominated to the Hall of Fame. This has allowed Mark Martin and Bill Elliot to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Two names along with Wendell Scott that should be going into the 2015 Hall of Fame class.
F-1 trying to fix tires
Formula One and Pirelli are working together with drivers to fix issues with their tires. The tire this year made passing nearly impossible for everyone……okay that was a lie. Vettel got the good tires, there I said it!
