Good day sport fans! Tonight, HBO will bring you the first significant fight card since the Mayweather v Alvarez PPV. I’ll break down each matchup and offer my predictions.
Adonis Stevenson vs. Tavoris Cloud, 12 rounds, for Stevenson’s WBC light heavyweight title
Leading off the night will be an extremely intriguing light heavyweight clash between KO artist Stevenson and hard-hitting Cloud. Stevenson is coming off an absolute sensational 1st round knockout of Chad Dawson while Cloud is trying to rebound off a disappointing loss against the ageless Bernard Hopkins.
Stevenson, who started the sport at a tender age of 27, has sky-rocketed to this point and is on the brink of some HUGE fights if he can pull this off but he shouldn’t be looking past the always durable Cloud. Cloud didn’t look good against Hopkins but at the end of the day, does anybody? I believe Cloud’s combo punching will cause Stevenson issues but the power will be too much to overcome.
Stevenson KO6 Cloud
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Brian Vera, 12 rounds, light heavyweight
First thing first; Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. should be embarrassed for missing weight by the amount he did. Originally a middleweight clash, it was discovered the Chavez Jr. was NOWHERE close to that weight and Top Rank, his promotion, was forced to up the weight to appease the spoil Chavez. Vera, unfortunately, was powerless to fight this weight change and was forced to gain weight to meet the new required standard.
Getting to the fight, Chavez Jr. looked awful at the weigh-in and genuinely looks disinterested in this fight. He has a huge money rematch waiting for him with Martinez but I am extremely skeptical if he can will his way to win this one. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one but the man needs to seriously begin to dedicate himself to the sport. What a joke.
Chavez Jr. 12UD Vera
