Good morning you Kings of lug nuts! You Queens of torque wrenches! How are you? Me? I’m writing this article while enjoying Point Break and sipping on a fine adult beverage after a long day at about 1:30 in the morning and I’m doing exceptionally better with that. We don’t have a lot of news coming out of this week as we head to Bristol for the race weekend but we do have a few things and one major thing! So let’s dive into it brah!
NASCAR changes cool down rule on qualifying
NASCAR made the INCREDIABLY wise decision to change the qualifying rule on cool down units. The teams can now use one cool down unit on the engine through either the left or right of the hood flap. The hood will not be allowed to be open nor is plugging into a generator allowed. Now two crew members are allowed over the wall to do any needed changes for the driver or car. And no cool down laps will be permitted.
I cannot even begin to describe how much I support this decision. If they had not made the changes someone was going to get rear ended at Bristol and it was going to a massive mess. I totally understand waiting on the change though.
I understand why it took so long. The Cup cars didn’t use this qualifying at Daytona so Phoenix was the first test. We knew there was an issue and it was confirmed at Vegas. NASCAR made the correct call in changing things over as I’d made it known on twitter I thought Bristol and Martinsville was going to be a mess if they didn’t.
I also want to state for the record that no one of the normal press broke this news. Not Jeff Gluck, Jenna Fryer, Jim Utter or Bob Pockrass. It was actually The Orange Cone! So go Coney!
Sony trying to shut down “Ricky Bobby” themed Bar
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby or as is known in my house the second greatest documentary, has apparently been turned into a themed restaurant in Texas. The waitresses are known as “Smokin’ hotties” and the establishment is known as Ricky Bobby Sports Saloon & Restaurant. The owners are saying the name Ricky Bobby can’t be trademarked but Sony says otherwise. As for me? Well, I’m too jacked up on Mountain Dew to care!
McDowell making 150 race attempt
At Bristol Michael McDowell will make his 150 race attempt in Sprint Cup as he drives the 95 for Leavine Family Racing. Best of luck little fella.
NASCAR launches online network
If you can’t make it to the race track to see some of the lower NASCAR series then I have a solution for you. NASCAR has launched of FansChoice.tv which will allow you to watch all the races for AMA, IMSA and NASCAR are all involved in this brand that will include live streaming. Think of it as Netflix for race fans.
Hamlin, Rowdy, Kenseth and Ragan in Charity race
Denny Hamlin’s annual Short Track Showdown at South Boston Speedway will occur as normal with Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, David Ragan and a host of other NASCAR and Late Model racers will run the 200 lap event as it leads up to the spring race weekend in Richmond. I’ll say this, NASCAR drivers and the racing world in general are a generous bunch.
Newman on “Tanked”
Ryan Newman and his lovely wife Krissie’s animal rescue facility known as Rescue Ranch will be featured on the hit Animal Planet show “Tanked” tonight, March 14th at 10:00 PM Est.
Kenseth setting up back up drivers
Matt Kenseth has set up some back up drivers for Auto Club Speedway next weekend. His wife Katie is expecting the couple’s third child and Matt’s fourth. Backing up the Nationwide car will be Sam Hornish Jr. and on the cup side will be Jeff Burton. Reported this week on Monday was Paul Menard’s bride was also expecting. As of this writing she has not given birth.
Race Times and Channels Reminder
The Nationwide series will be hitting the track for the Lilly Diabetes 300 on Saturday at 1:00 PM Est on ESPN2.
The Sprint Cup series will be on track for the Food City 500 on Sunday at 12:30 PM Est on FOX.
