News and Notes from Daytona Speed Week 1!
Hello kids, how are you doing today? I’m doing fantastic because we are BACK to racing! Tomorrow night is the Sprint Unlimited and damn I have missed racing something awful! So let’s not waste any more time and get after it!
“King” Petty comments on Danica
Richard Petty and Petty Family must have real issue with Danica Patrick. Petty did a interview in Canada and said that Danica was great PR for the sport and brings in a great set of new fans. Instead of leaving it at that he also made it known that Danica wouldn’t win a race unless everyone else stayed home.
Richard has earned the right to make comments, I get that. However, Marcos Ambrose doesn’t seem to be able to win anywhere we don’t also turn right, and Aric Almirola didn’t become competitive until the end of the season. Perhaps “The King” should be less worried about the 10 and a helluva lot more worried about the 9 and 43.
Danica responds and announces she’ll drive in Nationwide in Daytona again
Danica was asked as we knew she would be at Media Day in Daytona. She took the high road saying criticism and comments like that are what makes the sport interesting. Good for her. She also announced she will drive for Turner Scott Motorsport in the 30 for the Daytona Nationwide race in February. The car will be sponsored by the Florida Lottery.
Qualifying gets a small change
Yes, they just put in the system and they are already screwing with it. Okay, not drastically. NASCAR’s Robin Pemberton announced that teams will be allowed to make small adjustments including tire, tape, and wedge adjustments with one helmeted crew member and three crew members working on the car during the session break.
Auto Trader joins the sport
Auto Trader and its brand Kelly Blue Book have entered into NASCAR. Auto Trader’s website AutoTrader.com will be on the 22 of Penske Driver Joey Logano. The Kelly Blue Book brand will appear on Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s 88.
Gordon to retire if he wins 5th title?
Jeff Gordon made all kinds of headlines when he said that if he won a fifth title he’d retire this year. While Gordon said he was serious about his claim, many close to him said they don’t believe he’d be ready to walk away. Personally, I see Jeff driving two more years before walking away to turn the 24 over to Chase Elliot.
TSM gets Hornaday Jr. a ride for Daytona
Turner Scott Motorsports and Ron Hornaday Jr. have come together for Ron to drive the 30 for TSM in the Camping World Truck Series in Daytona. The owners of TSM are trying to make this a full time gig for Ron. TSM can do this for Ron, but they couldn’t find a ride for Jeb Burton?! What a crock…
Tony Stewart made laps tonight in Daytona for the Sprint Unlimited Practice. He said everything at the time was great, and his leg was 65% before he was in the car. He plans to have no drivers on standby. He also has announced the famous scooter he drove around the race track will be auctioned off that custom scooter he hopped around in to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation.
Happy joins Ripkin.
Kevin Harvick has become a board member of the Cal Ripkin Sr. foundation. The foundation, along with Kevin’s are coming together with the building of a youth park in Greensboro, NC.
Bloomin’ Monday returns
If Kevin Harvick finishes in the top-10 then you will be able to go Outback Steak House and get a free blooming onion. This started when the company was with Ryan Newman at Stewart-Haas Racing about two years ago. Ryan moved to Richard Childress Racing and Outback stayed with SHR and became a sponsor of Kevin’s.
Holy crap! Yeley does have a cup ride!
JJ Yeley announced that he is driving the 44 for Xxxtreme Motorsports. After Las Vegas the team will attempt to qualify AND finish every race. Good for them!
DW has gallbladder surgery
Fox Announcer and legendary Hall of Fame driver Darrel Waltrip had his gallbladder removed Thursday. Get well soon, Jaws. Need to air my boogity boogity boogity.
Mulit-Zone tread returns and expands
Last year Goodyear brought the Multi-zone tread to NASCAR at Kansas and Atlanta. Goodyear announced the tire will again return to Atlanta and Kansas, and will also be raced at Texas along with Richmond. The tire could be added to more tracks pending testing.
Biffle working on new deal
In two articles now I’ve mentioned that I believe Greg Biffle is a lifer at Roush Fenway Racing. Well, at Media Day he was asked and he responded by saying he believes he and 3M will both return with potentially announcing a deal in the first quarter of the year.
Dirty Mo Radio expands
Dirty Mo Radio which is the podcast channel of Dale Earnhardt Jr. is expanding. The lineup will go from one to four podcasts this season. It will include The Monday Recap, Fast Lane Family, JRM 360, and the Dale Jr. Download which was the staple last year. I highly recommend them, not just for Junior fans but fans of racing period. The Dale Jr. Download was excellent last season!
Grand Marshal, flag waivers and singing announcements
It was announced that Larry King will be the grand marshal for the Sprint Unlimited with his wife Shawn. Actor Gary Sinise will start the race by waiving the green flag to start the 500. Gary Sinise played Lt. Dan in one of the most amazing movies of all time, Forest Gump. Jennnnnnay…Okay I’ll stop. Luke Bryan will be playing the pre-race concert and also announced was Aloe Blacc will sing the national anthem
We’re back on the track!
The Sprint Unlimited will come to us LIVE on Fox Sports 1 at 8:00 PM, tomorrow Saturday February 15th! Defending race winner is Kevin Harvick! It feels damn good to type that again!
Also if you have a chance I cannot recommend enough to you to check out the ARCA Re/Max Series race from Daytona! That is always a great race! That will air on Saturday, February 15th at 4:15 PM on Fox Sports 1.
Random Sport/Non Sport Thought:
I’d like to wish my parents a Happy Anniversary today. They have been married officially for twenty- two years, which is amazing considering the fact some people don’t stay married for two let alone twenty-two.
