Manchester United win Community Shield
Man United win community shield
Manchester United have bested Wigan Athletic 2-0 in the FA community Shield, a goal each half from the sublime Robin Van Persie.
Wigan struggled against a dominant United passing game, and Van Persie was fantastic in a pass to the wing which Patrice Evra then returned in a cross to Van Persie to finish superbly with a header. In the second half Van Persie struck again, a heavy strike taking a deflection into the net. David Moyes has now lifted his first silverware at Manchester United, although the shield is somewhat of a competitive / friendly game.
United will take many positives from the win, the FA’s curtain raiser for next weekends Premiership kick off. Van Persie looked as good as ever, and highly rated debutant Wilfred Zaha showed signs of great promise. Zaha’s pace and gifted feet look as if he could develop into a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque player should the 20 year old continue developing physically. Interestingly, Antonio Valencia worn the number 25 shirt for the match, no longer donning the 7 shirt he wore last season… the 7 shirt being Ronaldo’s old number. A sign of a Ronalo return? United fans will hope so, but the midfield was good enough today regardless. Michael Carrick won man of the match and nearly Forty year old Ryan Giggs was majestic in his movement and passing game. As for the defence, a clean sheet speaks for itself.
The champions have lifted silverware once more, David Moyes is all smiles and surely Sir Alex Ferguson somewhere is smiling too.
