Arsenal continue to dominate early Premier League Season
After another weekend of English Premier League Soccer, the only team showing real championship form remains as Arsenal. After suffering an opening day loss back in August, the North London club have emerged on a streak of dominant performances, playing beautiful passing football and looking the most convincing side in the league. They have played 9, won 7, drawn 1 and lost just 1, which puts them top of the league with 22 points, 2 points clear of second placed Chelsea.
The difference appears to be the renaissance of Arsene Wenger as a manager. The sides and style he has overseen this season have been spot on. Wenger is clearly enjoying his role as the biggest boss in the league now that Alex Ferguson has gone, and Wenger is by far the most experienced and longest serving boss in the league. He looks confident again. He has been helped by a young Arsenal side which is maturing, showing some fine displays of footballing confidence. Young Aaron Ramsey has brushed off a dismal showing last season to emerge as a key player this season, the midfielders passes and goal scoring consistency has been a highlight for the London fans. The £42 million signing of pass master Mehsut Ozil has also proved genius, the best signing anywhere in the world this year it has to be said. Ozil has added a reassurance and confidence to his Arsenal team mates, and his assist rate is to be envied by all other players in the league. Arsenal certainly look good, but can they maintain this? Chelsea are now coming back hot on their heels, after dispatching of Manchester City this weekend in a great 2-1 victory. Third placed Liverpool are starting to fall away, they won convincingly this weekend, but their inconsistency is starting to show, they only just scraped a 2-2 draw with Newcastle last weekend. Both Liverpool and Arsenal now start a Ten game run which sees them having to navigate some of the toughest fixtures of their seasons. The teams who are still to find their feet like Tottentham, Manchester City and Manchester United are waiting to pounce. Both Manchester clubs are currently off the pace, City on 16 and United on 14 points. There seems little doubt of the quality both these sides possess though, and it is just a matter of time before they start accumulating points and catching up the leaders as they probably fall away. In truth, a league is won over a year by a squad, and no one can really match the squads of City, United and Chelsea. They will come back. Tottenham are doing okay in 4th on 19 points, but the really impressive top half of the table performances have to go to Everton and Southampton. Despite vastly less money and squad talent than the rest of the top half of the table, Southampton and Everton have been going about their play very well. Everton are 6th on 18 points and Southampton sit one above them on goal difference. That means they are just a win and a draw away from topping the league if the other sides drop. Impressive. It has been a disarrayed start to the league for everyone apart from Arsenal. Wenger sits top right now, but with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea starting to catch up, and the Manchester clubs sure to challenge, it is just a matter of time before the title race truly ignites.
